CHAPTER SIX

NOSSA! SARA COULD see why the condominium building was called the Vista do Vale, because the scenery from the twenty-fifth-floor balcony was spectacular. Sara had never been inside an apartment this luxurious. It certainly didn’t feel like it was situated in a valley from where she was looking. After living her entire life in her parent’s one-story house on the ranch, she felt kind of queasy about how high up they were. Or maybe that was her pregnancy. Honestly, it was probably a little bit of both.

“Where did you say the fire escape was?” She called back to where Sebastian was setting her two large suitcases on the polished marble floor of the foyer.

He came through the double sliding glass doors that opened to an outside living space. A space that was almost as big as her whole nurse’s apartment at the hospital.

“I didn’t, but see that platform hanging over there?”

“Where—? Oh, no!” She’d noticed the contraption hanging a few floors below them. Panic went through her system, the queasiness growing exponentially.

“Relax, Sara. I’m kidding. They’re in the process of polishing and repairing the tile on this side of the building.”

“In that?” No one in their right mind would stand on what appeared little more than a wooden platform with a thin line of metal railing encircling the outside. Even as she looked, it seemed to sway in the breeze. Her nausea spiked. There was no way she would go out in something like that.

She could tell the difference, though, in the cobalt tiles that had been polished and those that had collected years of dust and grime from the city below. Even the “before” view, though, oozed opulence and wealth.

“The company has many years of experience in this work. They know what they’re doing.”

She glanced down again, and then backed away, only to bump into Sebastian, whose arm went around her to brace her. The warmth of his touch soothed her rapidly fraying nerves. “Seriously, we could get out if there were a fire, right?”

“There are stairs, in case the elevator goes out.”

“Have you ever had to use them?”

“I have. More than once.”

“Deus do céu.” She pressed both palms against her stomach. “Why?”

He turned her around to face him, hands still on her shoulders. “Hey, are you okay?”

“I think so. I just didn’t think this would all be so…” She couldn’t find the right word, so she settled for waving her hand to encompass the inside of his condominium. “How long have you lived here?”

“Not long. I moved here about a year ago.”

“And you’ve already used the stairs more than once?”

His thumbs trailed over her collarbones as he peered into her face, as if seeing something that worried him. “I was kidding. I only went up and down them for exercise when I knew I wouldn’t have time to go to the gym.”

Her whole body sagged closer to him. “Well, you could have said that right away.”

“I had no idea you were afraid of heights.”

“I’ve never really had a chance to test out whether I was or wasn’t.
